What is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the new and simplified process for registering micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) and is fully online, paperless, and based on self‑declaration. There is no registration fee charged by the government.

Classification of MSMEs

Effective from 1st July 2020, the classification is based on investment in plant & machinery/equipment and annual turnover:

  • Micro Enterprise: Investment up to Rs. 1 crore and turnover up to Rs. 5 crore.
  • Small Enterprise: Investment up to Rs. 10 crore and turnover up to Rs. 50 crore.
  • Medium Enterprise: Investment up to Rs. 50 crore and turnover up to Rs. 250 crore.
